HAY AND ENSILAGE

JUDGING AT LOWGARTH. RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED. The hay and ensilage entered in the competitions held by the JDowgarth branch of the Farmers’ Union were judged yesterday by Messrs. J. W. Palmer and C. Haines, of the Department of ■ Agriculture. Twenty-three crops were judged, and these were of general good quality. Mr. Palmer said that the entries were the biggest that had ever been received in the district, and the average. of points in the ensilage was very high, there being only a margin of 8 points in the 10 entries. In the topping of the stacks there had been a notable improvement, and there was far less waste than in the previous year. Referring to the variety of materials used, Mr. Palmer said that he based the judging solely on quality as he saw it, disregarding variety so as to put every kind of material on the same basis. The hay also was in very good condition,' and it was surprising to see how this had come back in spite of the adverse circumstances to which it had been subjected. The winner of the eup for hay and ensilage was Mr. A. D. Johnson, who topped both competitions. Mr. A. T. Sulzberger thanked the judges for their services, and referred to the good results from such competitions. He thanked the ladies who had provided the party with lunch and afternoon tea. He complimented the winners on their successes. Details are:— Ensilage.
