READY-MADE FARMS

STOCK MARKET AFFECTED. DECREASE IN THE DEMAND. Although dealers and others who have stock for sale have hopes of business later they are not enthusiastic over the demand in recent weeks for farms as going concerns. Stock agents seen on Tuesday, says the New Zealand Herald, said the majority of purchasers of farms as going concerns had. only a limited amount of capital available and they did not wish to face the extra expense of separate transactions involved in acquiring land and stock. "Ordinarily there should be a good demand for heifers now, but so far there has been little movement in stock,” said oiie of the auctioneers of a leading firm. “Inquiries are limited and recent sales have not been very satisfactory.” He added that prices were about £2 a Head lower than last year, but this had made uo material difference in the demand. Good grade stock was selling at about £7 and it met with a fair demand. The prices asked for pedigree stock were above the means of the average purchaser, who found finance a difficult proposition. Land agents do not regret the fact that prices for stock have come down. One agent said that generally the prospective dairy farmer could not afford to pay fancy prices, which would mean the difference between a profitable and an unprofitable venture. The ruling prices for stock had the effect of keeping down the “lock, stock and barrel” price of the farm, and it was a quotation on these lines which the majority of purchasers sought. It was stated that more than at any time previously were farmers giving heed to the individual production of their herds. In order to offset the low prices for butter-fat, higher production was aimed at and had been accomplished by a careful “culling” of herds.
