WATERSIDERS PERPLEXED
ISSUE OF LICENSES CEASES MELBOURNE CONTRADICTION FEDERAL MINISTRY’S MOVE ONLY FEW MEN MAY WORK By Telegraph—Press Assn.—-Copyright. Melbourne, June 23. An extraordinary position has arisen on the waterfront. After receiving a deputation from the federal management committee of the Waterside Workers’ Federation the Federal Assist-, ant Minister of Transport, Mr. C. E. Culley, instructed departmental officers to suspend the issue of licenses to waterside w-orkers. As it was announced that licenses which expired at the end of June could be presented from yesterday onwards for renewal for 12 months, this order caused great perplexity among shipowners and wutersiders. Some of the workers hud renewed their licenses early. yesterday morning, but believed, that mey would remain valid as the number of renewals made was less than 10 per cent, of the number of men normally employed on the waterfront, all of whom must possess licenses. An amazing situation has been created and, unless some further move is made by the Federal Ministry, these men only will be entitled to work on the water, front after June 30.
