RUGBY COMPETITIONS
TO-DAY’S SENIOR FIXTURES. Senior competition matches to be played to-day are: —Old Boys v. Star, at New Plymouth; Clifton v. Tukapa, at Waitara; Inglewood v. Celtic, ~at Stratford; Kaponga v. Okaiawa, at Kaponga; Hawera v. Athletic, at Hawera; Eltham v. Waimate, at Eltham; Patea v. Opunake, at Patea. The defeat of Stratford at the feet of Tukapa last week has stimulated interest in the northern division, at it has placed three teams —Clifton, Inglewood and Celtic —within striking distance of the leaders. Interest to-day will probably be divided between the CliftonTukapa match and the Celtic-Inglewood match. Clifton have shown improved form but will need to be at their best if Tukapa reproduce last week’s form. The losers in the Inglewood and Celtic match will have practically no chance of securing the divisional championship. This afternoon’s series of matches in the southern division marks the close of the first round. Okaiawa, the leaders, will meet Kaponga, one of the runnersup. Kaponga’s young players have been gaining more confidence. Hawera, anoher of the runners-up, will meet Athletic. Either Patea or Opunake will be eliminated in the match at .Patea from any prospect of annexing the premiership. ....... Inglewood.—Seniors to play . Celtic: R. Knott, C. Corkill, C. Hunt, E.
