Grand National Hurdles is 41b. more than has fever been carried successfully .in the race. . # * * * With a handy impost of 10.7, the New Zealand-bred Catkin is considered by Australian judges to be well placed in the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdles. ♦ # • # Before the weights were framed for the V.R.C. Grand Nationals one bet-tor-took £5OOO to £l5O about Mosstrooper for the double. : Phar Lap is back at Braeside from his holiday at Bacchus Marsh. Those who have seen -the champion remark upon his greatly improved appearance. ■ «' * * a After running second on June 6, Princess Betty (Chief Ruler—Marceline) won the Cornwall Mile at the V.R.C. Birthday meeting on June 8. She was at a good price. * The Paper Money—Piquant filly Dollar Princess was at a /long price when fehe won the second division of the Nursery Handicap at Canterbury Park on. June 6. ! At the same meeting Anda (Lord Quex—Perplexity) was second favourite in the second division of the Flying Handicap and won by three lengths. Auda was formerly a stablemate of Phar Lap, but is now trained by his owner, Mr. C. O’Rourke. Canterbury park is his favourite course. # .« The Canterbury Park meeting was a New Zealand field day, for, as well as Dollar princess, and Auda, Philippic (Deinosthenes —Ednaver) won the Canterbury Handicap, a big late commission making him favourite. * » « • ■ The members of the Taranaki Hunt Club will to-day meet at Mr. J. Cole’s, Waipapa.- The surrounding country has been well sparred and visitors are assured of a most enjoyable time. ; Corneroff.

Surprise may be expressed at seeing Corheroff’s name among-the maiden flat racers' at the Napier- Park "meeting, but as a matter of fact, the Daniloff geld-, ing, despite his excellent showings as & jumper,' has only , won one race in his career, and tliat was the Petane Hack Hurdles at Napier 12 months ago, 'writes “The Watcher.” It is rather remarkable that a 1 horse that has a sec j ond in a Grand. National Steeplechase to his credit, should have won only one race, but'it should'be' remembered that for a long time he was making a very slow - recovery from a . serious accident, and last winter saw his first proper winding-up Even then he was green as steeplechasers go, and it was a pity he should have required another long spell after the Grand National fixitiire. According to reports he has done a fair amount of hunting with the .Manawatu hounds, and this, with a couple of races on the flat at Napier, should see him fairly forward for one or two important jumping races later 'oh. Pakitere Sold.

During the course of the Auckland meeting W. McKinnon sold (Pakitere for hte patron, Mr. F. Ormond. The name of the purchaser has not been disclosed. Pewa will be turned out for a spell, which will leave Curie the only one of 'Mr. Ormond’s horses in work (says a Hastings writer). Curie will probably be a competitor in tho Trial Plate at Trentham next month, a race which was won a year or two back by his mate Toxeuma. A trio of two-year-old fillies will in all probability later on be taken in hand by McKinnon. They are Marais, 'by Arausio —Waterlea, Martur, by Arausio—Matty, and an unnamed daughter of Greyspear and Tragic.

Phar Lap’s Sisters. Fortune’s Wheel, the five-year-old sister to Phar Lap, in Mrs. J. Campbell’s stable at Riccarton, had to be spelled some time ago owing to meeting with a slight mishap. She is reported to be quite sound again, and to 'be striding along in useful tasks. She has put on a lot of condition, and generally has improved in appearance, so there is hope for her as a racing prospect next season. In this connection it is interesting to note that Phar Laps year younger sister, Nea Lap, is also again in active commission at Greenmeadows, and it is' expected that she will resume racing at the coming- Napier Park meeting., ‘‘Triple Crown” Winners. In view of the possibility, even probability, that another “triple crown” winner will be added to English records this in Cameronian, already winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and the Derby, it is interesting to note what horses have to date had their names so enrolled. First on the list comes West .Australian (by Melbourne) who won distinction in 1853, and at an interval of 12 years came the series of

victories on the part of the Frenchbred colt Gladiateur, by Monarque, who carried the colours of Count de Lagrange. Eleven other horses have subsequently won the treble, these being: Lord Lyon (by Stockwell), in 1866; Ormonde ('by Bend Or), in 1'886; Common (by Isonomy), in 1891; Galtee More (by Kendal), in 1897; Flying Fox (by Orme), in 1899; Diamond Jubilee (by St. Simon), in 1900; Rock Sand (by Sainfoin), in 1903; Pommern (by Polymelus), in 1915; Gay Crusader, (by Bayardo), in 1917; and Gainsborough (by Bayardo), in 1918.
