CHARITY BALL.

What promises to be the most representative function of its kind ever held in Taranaki is the charity ball, to be held on Wednesday evening next in the Agricultural Hall, New Plymouth, the main purpose of which is to provide funds for the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the relief of the poor and needy? The function has gained very wide interest, and patrons will be representative of the whole district. The charity ball idea was first commenced in Wellington nine years ago for ft similar purpose, and for years past it has been the largest and most popular gathering of the season in the capital city. A strong committee, of which Mr. D. L. McKay is chairman and Messrs. F. L. Read and J. J. Norris are joint secretaries, has been formed, and no trouble has been spared to ensure the comfort and pleasure of patrons. The supper arrangements are in the hands of a capable committee of ladies under the leadership of Mrs. T. McPhillips. The function will be under the patronage of His Grace Archbishop O’Shea, of Wellington, to whom it is anticipated that about 40 debutantes will be presented. This striking pageant will be one of the attractions of the evening. 1 TIKORANGI WOMAN’S INSTITUTE. The Tikorangi Woman's Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, when a large number attended. In the absence of the president, Mrs B. Jury, vice-president, was in the chair. The committee met to arrange for the lecture for the next meeting. Letters and invitations were read by the secretary and also an account of the annual meeting of Women’s Institutes at Palmers-, ton North last month. The competition winners were: Length of string, Mrs. Roy Sarten; parcel contents, Mrs. R. Sarten; musical parcels, Mrs. H. Foreman. Afternoon lea was later served by the hostesses. Mre. Sarten and Miss N. Morey.
