A GIFT EVENING.

A very pleasant function took place at the Carlton romps this week, when Miss Green and Mrs. Lewis entertained Miss Ethel Flintoff, whose marriage takes place shortly. During the evening dancing and vocal items were much enjoyed, the music being played by Miss Rogers and’ extras by Mrs. Muir, Mr. Abberley (violin solo), Mr. Kell Mr. Abberley (violin solo), Mr. Kelland, guitar duets by Mr. G. Nicholas and Mr. S. Ryan, piano solo by 0. Lewis and songs by Mr. Jacks. The lucky spot dance was won by Mr. Jacks and Miss Budge. Mr. A. Gallaway was master of ceremonies. After supper Mr. A. Smith presented Miss Flintoff with numerous gifts and wished her happiness. Mr. D. Hicks replied for Miss Flintoff. INGLEWOOD WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. About 60 members and friends attended a meeting of the Inglewood branch of the Women’s Institute on Wednesday afternoon. Seven new. members were enrolled. Three members of the committee were absent, being visitors in an official capacity to the lecture by Miss Lovell-Smith at St. Mary’s Hall, New Plymouth, on her experiences and work at the conference of the National Conference of women held in Vienna last year. 4 demonstration was given by Miss Foreman, Tikorangi, on the making of lampshades. A roll call of household hints proved to be the means of exchange of many useful ideas for lighten'ing of the daily round. A competition for home-made slippers was won by Mrs. Burgess. ■ Mrs. Brown was second.
