GOLF ON ANZAC DAY
ARCHBISHOP DISAPPROVES. | PLAYERS TAKEN TO TASK. Some remarks made by Archbishop Julius in the course of a short address at the Anzac Day service held at the Shirley golf links, Christchurch, on Saturday, were not at all the kind of remarks he had been expected to make. They were distinctly critical in 4 tone. The Archbishop took members to task for playing golf on Anzac Day, and suggested that the service was only so much balm to their consciences. He himself had been unwilling to take the service, rig- said. He had been like Balaam’s ass m the Bible that did not want to go.
All golf courses except those that are on public reserves are open fc- play on Anzac Day,'but the Christchurch Club is the only one in Christchurch which holds a service at the links. There were no competitions at Shirley on Saturday, friendly games only being played. The Anzac Day service at Shirley was inaugurated about three years the first one being taken by Bishop WestWatson.
