Royal commission on the constitution o Malta, of which Lord Askwith is chairman, Lord 'Strickland, the late Premier, filed a ministerial statement ascribing the present situation to the virulent campaign against the Constitutionalist Party, the Nationalist abuse of their ministerial majority, and the. systematic abuse of religion for political purLord Strickland urged that these circumstances should not serVe as a pretext for the withdrawal of the constitution and a reversion to Crown colony status, which would prove disastrous. He proposed a reduction of the 'Senate from 17 to 12. He said that Maltese, not Italian, was the national language and should be raised to. the standard of an official language with English as the Empire language.
