CADETS AS TALLY CLERKS
DISCHARGE OF NORTHMOOR’S SLAG
FEELING AMONG WATERSIDERS.
Because tally clerks were selected from the cadets of the vessel Northmoor and not from the ranks of the waterside workers as is the custom, a dispute arose at the port of New Plymouth yesterday morning between the Watersiders’ Union and the authorities directing the unloading of the Northmoor’s slag cargo. When it was seen that watersiders were not to be employed for the tallying a meeting of the disputes committee of the union was held. The outcome of this meeting was that the work of unloading the vessel was continued yesterday, but whether or not it will be carried on to-day by the watersiders is not certain. It is stated that feeling amongst the unionists is very strong against the employment of ship’s cadets in positions usually filled bv themselves. They say that they regard the non-employinent of union labour as a breach of a custom which has been recognised since overseas vessels first visited the port. The Northmoor arrived off New Plymouth on Saturday from Wellington with a cargo of 1600 tons of slag. She did not berth, however, until yesterday morning.
