NO INSURANCE ON MAORIS

NON-EMPLOYMENT IN WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD SEEKS REMEDY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 26. The question of the non-employment of Maoris as members of the permanent staff was raised at the meeting of the Harbour Board by Mr. H. D. Bennett, who said he understood the reason was one of insurance. Personally he could see no reason for such differentiation against Maoris. The chairman, Mr. J. W. Mac Ewan, said the Government Life Assurance Department or the insurance companies would not accept risk on members of the Native race and the board’s Regulations required that members of the permanent staff must be insured. He agreed that it was not fair to differentiate against Maoris and, if possible, the board should find a remedy for the position.

After further discussion the chairman stated that a report on the matter would be submitted. to the next meeting.
