The Central School held its annual picnic yesterday at the East End beach in fine though windy weather, despite threatening conditions in the early morning. There was a'large attendance of children and adults, every one of the numerous shady spots being occupied by picnic parties. In the afternoon races were held for the children, including a number of swimming events. Care was taken to see that the programme was so arranged that every child reqeived a small prize. Well satisfied with the comforts and facilities provided for them, the party of 80 earthquake refugees quartered in the East End pavilion, New Plymouth, on Wednesday night rapidly accommodated themselves to their new surroundings yesterday. A roster was prepared of those to perform duties in the kitchen on the first day. The cooking arrangements are being directed by Mr. J. Shepherd, and for meals the children are catered for at the first sitting and the adults at the second. The. women are most appreciative of what is being done for them and are willing to help in every way. The freshness and cleanness of the surroundings greatly appealed to them, and particularly the white sheets and tablecloths, dmenities that many of them had not seen since before the earthquake. ' The children are delighted that they have been billetted.on the beach. It is stated that a sewing machine would serve a useful purpose at the pavilion. Should one be available the owner is requested to communicate either with the central committee, or the Red Cross-St. John committee.
