Inspector Fraser returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night aftei' a short visit to Wellington. Rev. Father Minogue, who has been on a visit to Palmerston North and Wellington, has returned to New Plymouth.

The death is reported by ,cable from Sydney of Mr. L'eslie Arnott, one of the pioneers of the biscuit manufacturing industry in Australia, at the age of 74.

Lady Frances Balfour, the authoress, has died, states a cable from London. She was a sister-in-law of the late Lord Balfour and wrote a number of biographies.

The Hon, Mr. Justice Adams was motored to the North Egmont Hostel by Mr. S. F. Grayling yesterday afternoon. To-day he will visit the Dawson Falls House, accompanied by Mr. G. M. Spence. The death is reported from Auckland of Mr. Geo. Deane, manager for New Zealand of Carmichael and Co., Limited, paper merchants, etc. Mr. Deane, who was 57 years of age, became ill about seven months ago. He leaves a wife (who is in a delicate state of health); foul - sons and a daughter. He was a’ man who was highly regarded by business friends throughout the Dominion, and his death will be sincerely regretted. The Rev. John Wear Burton has been elected president of the Methodist Conference of New South Wales, says a Sydney cable. He spent his early years in New Zealand, where he was educated and entered the ministry; he served at Thames and then for some years in the Fiji Mission, afterwards coming to Australia. Mr. Burton is well known in New Plymouth, where he occupied the pulpit at Whiteley Church about 20 years ago and took a leading part in the activities of the town.

Motions of sympathy with Mr. C. H. Weston, a past president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, and with Mr. W. C. Weston in their bereavement were passed at a meeting of the council of the chamber last night. The late Hon. T. S. Weston had been a president of the chamber, said Mr. L. M. Moss, and his great abilities were well known to the older members. A letter expressing sympathy with Mr. J. McLeod in the illness of his wife and hopes for her recovery is also to be sent.

Mr. C. E. Harrisson has been appointed manager for New Zealand of the London and Lancashire Insurance Company, Limited, in succession to Mr. Henry Walkley, who recently suffered a breakdown in health. Mr. Harrisson, who has been transferred from Western Australia, has had a long period of service with the company. Mr. Walkley opened the New Zealand branch of the company in 1911, and has had an uninterrupted connection with the fire insurance business in Australia and New Zealand for 55 years. At the conclusion of the morning session at the W.C.T.U. convention in Hawera yesterday a brief service was held in memory of members who had passed away. These were: Mrs. Simpson, president of the Inglewood branch and district vice-president, Mis’s Paulger, the oldest member of the Inglewood Union, Mrs. Bicheno, Waitara, and Mrs. Morrison, Eltham. The president, MrS. Phillips, Ngaere, in expressing the sense of loss that was felt in the death of these valuable members, said young people were coming on to fill the places left vacant by the older generation, and to fill them worthily. Youth to-day had advantages that it had never had before, the young people being trained in the right way. They looked to the youth to play a great part not only in temperance but in other spheres, not only for New Zealand but for the world at large. They looked to the young people to fill their place as they passed on. Appropriate hjinns were sung.
