PICNIC AT TARURUTANGI
gathering of settlers SPORTS AND COMPETITIONS. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF BENEFIT. ■Settlers of the Tarurutangi district forgot the cares of the farm yesterday and with their wives and families enjoyed themselves at the annual settlers picnic which has been successfully revived during the past two years. Unfortunately weather was bad in the morning, but as complete arrangements had been made it was decided to continue with the programme. With the exception of a few showers the day proved fine, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. The location of the picnic was the cricket ground, a spacious paddock in the property of Mr. A. Street. It is , centrally situated, well sheltered, and indeed ideal for the purpose, its proxi- * mity to the hall adding to its convenience from the viewpoint of catering. There was a representative attendance additional interest being lent by the fact that the' proceeds were to be devoted to the earthquake relief fund. The picnic element predominated. There was a varied programme of athletic and field events, and such 'attractions as chain-stepping and other competitions , in which the elder people took a prominent part. The winning of the prizes was a minor consideration, unless it-wa-s for the purpose of handing it back to increase the earthquake funds, which the majority of winners did. The child-': ren were not forgotten, and under the supervision of their teacher, Mrs. E. Deighton, the day was made a memorable one for them with numerous races. After they had entertained those present with some bright singing each, child was the recipient of a bag of sweets.
The ladies as usual contributed their quota to the success of the day, having charge of the catering arrangements. Luncheon of the usual high standard was served free to all in the Tarurutangi Hall, and in the afternoon a dainty afternoon tea was dispensed. Mrs. P. Street .was the convenor of the ladies’ committee, and Mrs. E. Deighton the secretary. A soft drinks and icecream stall under the supervision of Mrs. M. Street, assisted by. Misses N..
