KAPONGA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent). The euchre tournament and dance in the Kaponga town hall on Friday was well patronised, 72 players taking part. The tournament was conducted by Messrs. E. W. Blackwell and Ken. Williams. Prizes were' donated for the tourney by Mesdames A. V. Tait, H. A. Gallagher, E. W. Blackwell, and Messrs. K. A. Grace, E. L. Abbott, A. W. Anderson and F. W. Fallows. These prizes were Avon by the following: Ladies’ first prize, Mrs. 0. Evans (New Plymouth); ladies’ second • prize, Mrs. A. P. M. Gargan (Riverlea); ladies’ sealed handicap prize, Miss A. Powell; men’s first prize, Mr. L. Newport (Palmer Road); men’s second prize, Mr. S. Death; men’s sealed handicap prize, Mr. E. Cox. Supper was served at the conclusion of the tourney by a committee of ladies comprising Mesdames E. W. Blackwell, H. A. Gallagher, I. Evans and L. Loveridge, who were ably assisted by the men folk on the committee. Dancing was held later in the evening, the music being supplied by Mrs. Evans (piano) and Messrs. L. and A. Wills (cornets). Mr. L. Loveridge made a capable and efficient master of ceremonies. An ice-cream arid soft drink stall was conducted under - the charge of Mrs. A. W. Anderson and Miss A. Maxwell. Prior to the commencement of the euchre tournament the Kaponga Brass Band gave a pleasing rendering of several well known marches and selections outside the front of the hall. A Monte Carlo dance held during the evening was won by Miss B. Reesby and Mr. P. Hammersley. As a result of the evening the earthquake relief fund will benefit to the extent of between £8 and £9.
