GAOL FOR GIVING POISON
TE AWAMUTU MAN IN COURT. MAXIMUM PENALTY IMPOSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Feb. 23. Edward Charles Walsh, farm hand, who pleaded guilty at Te Awamutu to a charge of administering poison with intent to injure his employer, was sentenced to three years’ hard labour. “You may consider yourself fortunate that you are not standing trial on a much more serious charge,” said Mr. Justice Herdman ,in sentencing Walsh. “Fortunately you did not put in enough poison to kill him.” His Honour gave him the maximum on the charge. Walsh had previously been declared an habitual criminal.
