The weather was hot and the wicket fast for the commencement of the fourth Test against the West Indies at Melbourne to-day. Grant won the toss and West Indies went in to bat. West Indies was dismissed for 99. and Australia reached 197 for one wicket. There was some very cautious batting before lunch, Grimmett’s first three overs being maidens. After lunch there was a cool chajige in ths weather, and the conditions were more pleasant, Headley made delightful strokes to all parts of the field off all of the bowlers. He batted 54 minutes for 33 and hit four boundaries. The spectators were very sorry to see him go. When the seventh wicket had fallen play was held up for 20 minutes through a slight fall of rain. The innings ended at 3.30 p.m. Ironmonger’s bowling was a real triumph. He bowled 20 overs, including seven maidens, and turned the ball on the true wicket. The batsmen’ nevertheless flattered the bowling, giving a surprisingly feeble display. Woodfull’s 50 took 90 minutes and Bradman 45 minutes, Bradman pulling off fast balls in a remarkable maimer, depicting his perfect eye and timing. The unfinished partnership added 147 runs, Bradman’s was a superb display. He had batted 78 minutes for 92, and hit eight boundaries. Woodfull batted 129 minutes for 75 and hit seven boundaries.
