YOUNG NATIVE’S NECK BROKEN.

TRAGEDY ON OKAIAWA FARM.

Dick Nuku, a native, aged 18 years, was killed instantly when a stacker fell on hmi and broke his neck yesterday. The fatality occurred at Paddy Ngaia’s property on Katouru Road, about two miles from Okaiawa, at 3.30 p.m. Nuku, with a number of other natives, was stacking hay when a peg of the mast and boom stacker gave way. At the moment Nuku and a companion were adjusting the grab and had turned to jump clear when the stacker struck Nuku. A doctor was summoned, but death had occurred instantly. Nuku resided with Toro Hereteraka, Tempsky Road, Okaiawa. He has two brothers living on Normanby Road. Injuries to his head and hands were received by George Woods when his motor-cycle struck a stationary pushcycle in Dixon Avenue, Hawera, at about 9.30 p.m. cn Saturday. Mr. Woods, dazzled by an approaching car, did not notice a boy holding a bicycle on the side of the street. The boy jumped clear, but Mr. Woods was thrown violently to the ground. Mr. Wood’s was taken to the hospital to have several stitches in his ear, and was subsequently discharged. Mr. Woods is a young man employed by Mr. McLeod, Manaia Road, Manaia. Both cycles were extensively damaged. t Maker! Kerehoma, . a native woman, residing at Tawhiti, received concussion as the result of a fall from a horse on Austin Road near yesterday morning. She was admitted to the Hawera hospital and is progressing satisfactorily. At the time the woman was chasing some horses when her own mount shied and threw her.
