The tragic ..uhdersea colliery at Whitehaven, known as the Haig Pit, was the scene of another serious explosion last night close to the spot, two miles under the sea, where 13 were killed in an explosion in 1928. * Two hundred meh were working belpw when a concrete, stopping wall sealing, as old section blown out, filling the neighbouring section with gas and wreckage. The majority escaped from the pit and rescuers with the greatest difficulty are fighting the firedamp to reach the remainder. ' Doctors descended equipped with special apparatus and attended the gassed men. Thirty-two badly affected were brought to the surface, a number of them being sent to hospital. Eight dead were brought out and. 20 remain unaccounted for. . It is feared there is little hope that they will bet rescued alive. 1
Between 3000 and 4000 men and women were still waiting at the pithead at midnight.
