HAWERA GIRL INJURED

RIFLE BULLET ENTERS ARM.

RICOCHET IN TARGET PRACTICE. A Hawera girl imagined on Tuesday evening that she had been murderously assaulted. The matter was cleared.yes--terday by the police, who. found that shots, one of which struck the girl,; were not aimed at her. The girl was walking, down Regent Street towards South Road on the lefthand side ’of the road when she heard a slight report and felt a pain in her right arm. The meaning of the incident had not been grasped by her before there was another report. This time a missile whistled past her head. She did not wait to ascertain who was responsible; but hurried to the house where she was employed. Medical aid was sought and a .22-in. calibre bullet, -was removed from the girl’s arm. , The police took a serious view of the occurrence. The-bullet had entered the right arm, so it, had . been fired apparently from the opposite side of the road, which might be taken to indicate intent. The girl was not able to throw any light upon the matter. A recent arrival in Hawera, she had, so far as she knew, no enemies noi’ anyone who could wish to injure her. Inquiries by the police yesterday, however, revealed that a yopng man had been practising in a yard with a .22 repeating rifle. Two of the pellets ricocheted off a wall into the. street at the time the girl was passing.. Actually they were fired on the side of the road she was using,-the deflection from the wall causing the bullet to enter the right arm. It is; understood further action will be taken.

They have succeeded in photographing the “high spots” of two years of high-tension adventure. From the moment Byrd and his party establish themselves at their camp (Little America), 2300 miles beyond the last outpost of civilisation, to that thrilling moment when Byrd and Balchen set out in. their giant Fokker plane to make the first flight over the South Pole ever attempted by man, “With Byrd at the South Pole” remains first and foremost a picture of vital, vivid action. An added attraction to the programme will depict scenes on and around Mount Egmont, including scenes taken at the opening of the Syme Hut.
