Bishop Cherrington, after attending the Lambeth Conference, set about gathering money in England for the Waikato dio.cese. He travelled 13,000 miles by road and preached or lectured on 200 occasions. He' distributed 7000 pamphlets dealing with the work in the diocese. - ' Bishop Cherrington contrasted in his addresses the conditions in' the diocese, With those in England, where the very stonework of the noble' cathedral and churches breathed veneration, and where with beautiful, music and charming settings the whole atmosphere seemed sanctified. His Lordship told of the difficulties of administrating a scattered , diocese like Waikato, an area of 10,500 square miles, with a population of- • 128,000, including 10,000 Maoris. .. Lhe Bishop appealed for £2OOO to wipe off the overdraft of-.the diocese, and £5OO a /ear for five years to enable the diocese to consolidate its position so that more time could be devoted, to spiritual appeal and less worry to administration.
