Last Saturday evening Mrs. Morpeth entertained a number of friends at •bridge, at the Women’s Club, receiving her guests attired in a smart gown of light navy silk. The flowers woo beautifully arranged for the occasion and fires made the rooms bright. Among those present were Mr®. W. J. Bright, Mrs. R. G. B. Sinclair, Mrs. Collins, Miss Glenn, Mrs. R. F. Page, Mrs. C. J. Hawken, Miss McLean, Miss L. Caplen, Mrs. Dew Caplen, Mrs. ■ Powdrell, Mrs. Channing Tonks, Mrs. W. Duckworth, Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan, Mrs. I'. Power entertained a few friends at tea at “The Cottage,” Victoria Street, last week, when Mrs. Coakley, who has recently taken up her residence here, was the guest of the afternoon. Mr. Coakley was transferied here on the. staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile in Mr. McQain s place. * » ft • * On Monday afternoon Mrs. Castlebeig entertained at tea, when Mesdames R. H. Lecce, Arnold Thomson, H. H. Bramwell, H. W. Swinburn and W. M. Winks and Mies Thomson were present.
Mrs. Arlidge was hostess at tea on Friday of last week.
At the Park croquet lawns-last week the competition for the Bullock silver button for “A” players and the Godfrey 'silver buttons for “B” players, resulted in Mr. Exley and Miss Tait winning’ Yesterday in the weekly play for these buttons Mrs. J. W. Harding and Mrs. S. Barrow were the winners. Various handicap events and club competitions have also been played during the week. . , » # * /* V
On Wednesday evening the Hawaiian orchestra, pupils of Mr. and Mrs. Antoni ißonetti, gave a “break up” dance in the' ■Savoy to mark the end of the season. Winks, black satin; Mrs. •Evans, dark wine satin; Mrs. Guy (Ma.tapu), black satin; Mrs. Bonetti, sky blue frilled ninon with silver and blue ’tinsel bodice and low collared deco’lletage; Miss Gwen Purser,' eau <e m 1 floral georgette; Miss Adele Carter (Eltham), light jade frock orientally trimmed; Miss Geraldine Goodson, eau de nil silk chenille and georgette, with touch of scarlet; Miss Sylvia Ryan, black georgette; Mi-s Valda Ryan, autiimn tinted floral gilbrae voile; Mi.s Mildred Keenan, black georgette;-. Probably the most enjoyable of the •aeries of ‘ evenings arranged by the ‘bridge circle of the Women’s Club throughout the season was held Ihuisday evening last, when the circle celebrated its winding up with flag bridge. Those at the winning table were Mrs. Jack Bavlcy, Mrs. Wylie and Miss McDonald. Prizes won throughout the last part of the season in progressive bridge were also presented, Mrs. J. Y. and Miss Huggins winning in the “A” division and Mrs. A. E. Stevens <rnd Mrs. J. Campbell in the “B” division On bphalf of all those who had so enjoyed all the pleasant evenings, Mrs. F. W, Sutton thanked Mrs. Scott, who was mainly responsible for the smooth running of the circle evenings, for her untiring energy, and very often selfsacrifice throughout the season. Mr. and Mrs. Hart, Wellington, passed .through Hawera early in. the wcex on their return from Warkworth, where they were visiting' Mr. and Mrs. Beresford Hart. During their stay here they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. IV. J. Bright.
Last week Mrs. J. R. Corrigan was hostess at tea, those present being Mesdames. C. Purser, W. F- Buis.t, S. A. Chisholm, W; Q. Simpson, P. 0. Veale, G. Buckeridge, Alec Corrigan, E. A. Pacey, Claude Harrison and Mademoiselle Poyau. Miss D. Corrigan assisted her mother.
On Monday the play chosen for the Women’s Club play-reading circle’s last evening of the season, was A. A. Milne’s “Michael and Mary,” a happy choice and very much appreciated by all who heard it. The characters were 'nterpreted' by Mrs. Clem Trotter, Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan, Miss Reilly, x Miss May 'Burges#!. Miss McLean, Miss E. Caplen. Miss Glenn, Miss Anne Page, Miss Betty Ryan and Miss-Hunter. The stage directions were read by Mrs. R. F. Page. Among others present were Miss Symes (Waverley), Mrs. Morpeth, Mrs. W. J. Bright, Mrs. Woodward, Mrs. F. WSutton, Mrs. Duckworth, Mrs. Carey, and Miss Carey (Wairarapa), Miss Buchanan, Mrs. C. Bayley, Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Jansen.
Mrs. E. A. Pacey was hostess at tea last week, when Mesdames L. J. Bull, Murray Page, J. R. Corrigan and A. K. North and Miss Dorrie Corrigan were among those entertained. ♦ * * # i On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. T. R. Overton entertained at tea, receiving her guests attired in a pretty frock of peach beige georgette and lace. Iceland poppies made tasty decorations. Among those present were Mesdames F. W. Sutton, H. R. Kemp, J. B. Murdoch, iP. Bond, W. MeL’lDowie, Clem Trotter and Murray Page.
