POWER BOARD’S ECONOMY
WAGES REMAIN FOR THE PRESENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Te Aroha, Last Night. The Thames'. Valley Power Board today considered in committee the question of effecting economies by various means, including a reduction in salaries. The chairman, Mr. F. M. Strange, later made a statement to- the Press in which he said it had been decided to take no action at present, but the whole position would be reviewed in February next. The chairman said the costs of administration in the Thames Valley Board were the lowest in the Dominion, with the exception of Hawke’s Bay, whicli sold most of its current in bulk to Napier and Hastings. The board took the view that as most of the employees were protected by awards it was unfair to start economies by reducing the salaries of those without protection and bringing the payment down in the higher branches to less than the wages of ordinary labourers. It was held that if salaries and wages are to be reduced it should be general and the Government should take the initiative.
