BROADCASTING PROGRAMMES.
(To the Editor.) gj r> —May I trespass on your valuable space to state what I know to be the general feeling of the radio listeners of New Zealand in regard to the type of programme broadcast by our main YA station? One can readily accede that the task of a radio station director is one of great magnitude and discretion. To please everyone of his vast unseen audience is, of course, an impossibility. In view of this fact it should therefore be his aim to cater for the majority of his listeners. It appears, however, that our main station director thinks otherwise, judging by the type of programme 2YA puts over. The majority of the programmes now broadcast are 75 per cent, classical, both in instrument and song; vaiiation seems to be an unknown qualitv. Possibly this type of programme suits the master musician, who can receive a finer interpretation than the. general listener-in. In' these times of depression one does not enjoy listening to long classical renderings, but apparently the general listener is. not considered in the setting up of a programme. Broadcasting of sport, such as boxing, wrestling and speedways would do much to off-set the dry musical side, but who can expect 2YA to let sport inter--fere with their week-old arrangements? What the present Broadcasting Company w-ants is a bit of trade opposition, then they would, perhaps,' earnestly try to please those who are supplying them with a means of livelihood. The radio public are quickly losing faith with the Broadcasting Company, and if' the. co_m n nany does not pursue a more progressive course, it is apparent that the accession of the Government into the radio field will not be merely suggested, but will be demanded. Thanking yen for this opportunity of commenting on a bone of conterftion, and hoping that a more able pen than mine will take further toll.—I am, etc, DISGUSTED.
