A London cablegram reports the death of Dame Mary Sch'a’rlieb, aged 85 years. She was Governor of St, Mary’s College, Paddington, and consulting surgeon to various hospitals. She was the author of a number of medical ySorks. " A Melbourne cable reports the-death of Clarence Webb, one, of the most promising athletes and physical culturists in Australia, aged 48. He had just concluded a series of lectures on the care of the body when he returned home and died suddenly. He was a former champion wrestler.
Advice has been received that Constable F. Mills, New Plymouth, having passed the police examinations held inSeptember, has qualified for promotion to the rank of sergeant. Constable Cantion, Mokau, passed the literary section of the examination entitling him to promotion to sub-inspector. A London message says that Mr. G. B. Humphreys, of Christ’s College, Cambridge, an anthropological investigator, in New Guinea, where he lost a valuable collection through shipwreck, also in the. New Hebrides and elsewhere in the Pacific; has been appointed keeper of the Melanesian collection in the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
