SOUTH TARANAKI CRICKET

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW. s WEAKNESSES IN BOWLING. The South Taranaki cricket division senior fixtures for to-morrow should provide some interesting play. At Hawera Okaiawa will meet Hawera, and if it fields the same team a& last week, probably the strongest club team fielded for a long time, will ■be hard to beat.\ Hawera’s performance at Patea was really better than the score indicated for it was, a case of taking risks to get runs. Old Boys A will meet Patea at Hawera. On present form the game may go either way. Perhaps a turn of batting first might assist Old Boys, who should do much better than previously. Patea has several players who are capable of making runs, but the bowling* appears to be weak —though the same remark applies generally to all of the teams. High School will visit Kaponga and has only to show last week’s form to make matters interesting. School is probably a better all-round team than Kaponga, whose tail is very weak. Stratford and Old Boys B will occupy the Stratford ground. Stratford is always hard to beat at home and some interesting cricket should result. The fixtures so far have revealed that bowling is becoming a neglected art. The fundamental -length is rarely seen with the result that batsmen have stayed in ’Jong- enough to compile totals which good bowling, .would: keep down. It is apparent that systematic bowling practice is not,;indulged in by players generally. There may be some exceptions, but they are very-few. Perhaps if bowlers even an hour a week, a.proper length pitch with a mark/say a foot wide, to aim at, they would be surprised with the result. C. T., B. Turner practiced every morning for three seasons before he was satisfied with his length. WEDNESDAY GAME. OLD BOYS DEFEAT HAWERA. In a cricket match at Hawera on Wednesday Old Boys beat Hawera by 18 runs. H. Sargent (50) and A. Worrall (26) gave Hawera a good start, but with their dismissal the only batsman to make a stand was C. Lovell (>l3 not out), the side being all out for 117. For a while it appeared as though Old Boys would not reach this total. Despite fair innings by Milroy (18) and Moloney (25) seven wickets were down for 59. Gray and Johnson came to light, the last man being dismissed with the total - at 1'35. Details are: — HAWERA. H. Sargfent, c Moloney, b R. Clarke 50 A. Worrall, c and b Moloney .... 26 A.
