FILM DISPUTE SETTLEMENT
“VICTORY FOR THE GOVERNMENT.” REMOVAL OF FOOTAGE TAX. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, NoV. 12. The announcement by the Acting--Prime Minister that the film deadlock had been overcome means in effect that the film distributors have agreed to resume operations on the terms the Government offered, them some time ago. The abolition of the footage tax was mentioned when the Government brought in the new form of film hire tax, and the Government said then that it did not believe in the tax per foot. The offer to remove the footage tax came as the result of a request made by the exhibitors some weeks ago. It has been removed now from July 1, the date the new tax came into operation. Mr. Ransom’s statement announces really a victory for the Government. The footage tax amounted last year, in round flmires, to £26,000, but this year it would be slightly less. The film interests removed a great deal of film from bond some time ago, when- —in spite of assurances —they were afraid the footage tax would be increased. Now the footage tax has been removed this previous action was not a profitable one.
