FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

CAMPAIGN IN NEW ZEALAND. APPEAL BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The following statement in connection with the cancer research campaign beim» conducted throughout New Zealand has been issued by the Governor-Gen-eral, Lord Bledisloe: “The British Empire cancer campaign aims at organising and po-ordinating medical and public 3 efforts to improve the methods of diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to continue the investigation until the cancer problem is solved. The public can help by providing the necessary money. In the words of Mr. Sampson Handley it is for each man ,in the world to ensure so far as in him lies that a full knowledge of cancer is ready against the day he needs it for himself or for those dear to him. “The campaign has the active support of the King. The Duke of York, as president of the, campaign society, has sent the following cabled message: I wish you’* all success in establishing a branch of the British Empire cancer campaign in New Zealand and shall watch with great interest the progress of its work in the campaign against cancer, the great enemy of civilisation “Already the New Zealand branch has a research laboratory, has purchased supplies of radium, and is maintaining cancel’ clinics in the various centres. Cancer is curable if treated early in accessible sites, but at the present time it accounts for more deaths in New Zealand than any disease excepting diseases of the heart. The campaign merits the thoughtful consideration of the people of this Dominion, and I unhesitatingly solicit their generous aid in this great cause.”
