NEW PLYMOUTH MEN’S TITLES

The match play in the New Plymouth men's championships commenced on Saturday and there were many hard and interesting struggles. The big fight of the first round, was that between the Waitara champion W. B. Glasgow .and R. A. Boon. It was a great match in which both players went, round in under eighty. Boon commenced well and was two up at the third, but Glasgow won the next two and squared, the match. Boon collected the sixth and seventh and' was two up at the turn. The tenth was halved but then Glasgow started, to make things hard. He had squared the game, at the 16th and won the 17 th by placing a forty-yard approach ■ stone dead. . He was then dormy one and halved the last to win the game by one hole. Conway, who was putting vel'y well, had no difficulty in accounting for A. G. Johnson by the big margin of 9 up and 7. Stephenson with a score well in. the seventies ran home a comfortable winner from Hine, and Chong had no trouble in- leading Street home, the game finishing on the fatal 14tn. F. S. Johns and Carlson had a stern struggle but the former’s experience and match temperament just turned the scales in his .favour. In the second round Glasgow and ■Stephenson had a, battle royal in which the golf reached a very high staudard. The first five holes- were halved .in scratch score figures but Glasgow missed an easy putt for a half , at the sixth and Stephenson was one up. He won the next three holes with 3, 5 and 4, and was four up at the turn, having come out in 39 to his opponent’s 44. The tenth was halved. Glasgow took one back when his opponent put his tee shot out -of bounds at the 11th. The 12th was halved in threes and Glasgow further reduced the lead by holing Ifis chip at the 'next for a three and a win. The 14th .was halved in three, but a great four saw the Waitara man get another one 'back at the 15th. tie looked sure to square the game at the 16th, but Stephenson came to light with a ten-footer , for a half. The end came at the 17 th, where Glasgow pulled his tee shot and was short with his second and Stephenson took the hole and the match with a four. He was round in 75 to his opponents 77. Glasgow came home in 33 and might easily have won but for. the steadiness of Jiis opponent over the last seven holes. . ’ , There were no real surprises in the intermediate division except the solid defeat of Morrison at the hands of H. Williams. The youngster was right off his game and the older player had no great trouble in winning. C. H. Wynyard, who is playing a greatly improved game, accounted for J.' T. Pavitt comfortably, but -Brewer had a very hard match with J. D. Wilson and the result might have different if the latter had been able to negotiate twofoot putts.- Haughton was playing too well for Stokoe and W. C. Weston carried, too many guns for S. F. Burgess. C. R. Corfe proved too good for E. George, though the match went to the 16th hole. There are three other games still to be played in this division. In the second round the match between Corfe and Williams should prove an interesting struggle. Among the juniors Morrison comfortably accounted for 1 Shimmin despite three or four stymies. D. H. Budd played good golf coming home against Nicholson and though the latter fought with his usual determination the younger player was too good and the game ended on the seventeenth. J. L. Mander proved too steady for the longhitting F. D. Johns. R. Renner produced an 81 agaihst P. Hawkins, which was too much for the latter to cope with. H. W. Kirkby was too good on the greens for S. A. Black 7 ; nd W. H, Broome always had the upper hand in hie game with S. H. Russell, who did not display his form of the /qualifying rounds. G. E. Cartwright was responsible for a surprise when he brought about the downfall of J. T. Pavitt on the 20th green after a hard game. Most of the winners in the limit division had not much anxiety. S. A. Black in playing his second round of the afternoon defeated D. McKay at the 14th, but S. Hutchen took R. Brokenshire to the 16th. J. McLean and K. F. Fookes had a good go. C. H. Stromborn, who is showing promise, was too good for T. Wilson, but E. Brokenshire had a hard fight before disposing of V. Duff. Galloway, H. W. Lightband and P. G. Grover had easy wins. The second round will provide some very interesting games and the competition is very open.
