GOLF IN TARANAKI

THE NORTH v. SOUTH MATCH. STRONG TEAMS EXPECTED.

(By

"stance.”)

The annual match betweep teams of eight players representing North Taranaki and South Taranaki will be played on the Fairfield links, Hawera, during the week-end. Both districts are fielding strong teams and South is confident of avenging the severe defeat of last year at Waiwakaiho. On paper at least it seems South should win as according to the lists published of the entrants, for the Dominion championship South has no fewer than six players handicapped at four or better, while North has only four. Nevertheless North has a fairly formidable lot. The six from New Plymouth, Conway, Chong, Stephenson, . Hasell, Mackay and Fyfe, are all playing well and the form of the Waitara and Inglewood representatives, Glasgow and Darlow, has been well up to standard. Glasgow has been well under 80 in his last two rounds at Waiwakaiho. The South team has not been selected but the three Quins, O'Callaghan, Abbott and Stewart would appear to be certainties and Anderson, Stratford, should have one of the other two places. The big battle will be between Conway and Leo Quin and a great deal of interest will centre round this encounter?' Quin beat his rival in the semifinal of the Taranaki championship at Waiwakaiho, l)Ut Conway had his revenge in the Sea'field Cup match at Eltham.

The foursomes will be played in the morning, and the pairs in the afternoon. All matches are to be played to the 18th as in the event of a tie the holes will count. The Hawera Club has thrown its links open for the day tb players from all over .the province.
