MOTUROA OIL ACTIVITY
INFLAMMABLE GAS ESCAPES. BLOW-OUT DURING AFTERNOON. A heavy flow of gas Was encountered at approximately 3230 ft in the course of drilling operations at the Moturoa Oil Company’s well yesterday afternoon. Tools were blown some distance up the bore and the drilling cable was damaged. Operations were suspended for the V night and the gas piped off outside the derrick, where a' very strong flow could stiH 'be heard escaping late last evening. To demonstrate the inflammable natilrb of the gas the 3in pipe from the main hole was turned off and the -jin pipe carrying the gae from outside the 6in casing in the hole was lit. Flames shot up about 4ft and continued to burn until the gas was turned down for a .moment and the flame extinguished. The main escape was then opened and the banked up gas hissed out under great pressure. In conversation with a News reporter Mr. C. N. Taylor, the managing-dir-, •ector, said that the flow of gas could be ' considered agood sign. It is understood that work will proceed again to-day.
