Work at the Mangamahoe dam, on the New Plymouth borough hydro-electric extension scheme, is proceeding apace and it is. expected that the dam will be completed by Christmas. , In spite of wet weather the earth filling is well up to time and the tractors I with their trailing scoops work night and day when tho weather permits. The filling is now within :d) feet of the top of the core wall, which is itself practically finished. The spillway is expected to be completed in another ten days aiid the remaining portion of that particular contract will then be the gap which has been left in the core wall, and the stone facing on the upper face of the filling when that .is completed. The valves are now being operated at night when they are closed to permit the water to bank up in order to assist the [lower plant. They are opened again 5 a.ra.
