MILLERTON MINE POSITION

STATEMENT BY THE COMPANY. Dunedin, October 11. With reference to Mr. H. E. Holland’s remarks at a deputation to the Minister, Mr. Fluveil, general manager of the Westport Coal Company, stdtes that it is the usual practice at all collieries with regard to those occupying the company’s houses to deduct the rent from the pay tickets.

Although the mine was working short time owing to lack of orders, this did not prevent the men from going out on strike over a trivial matter in August and remaining out a fortnight. Apparently the rent for this period was deducted as usual. No complaint had been made by union officials, or the matter might have received consideration, notwithstanding that the idle time was due to a strike. Mr. Holland’s statement seemed to imply that most of the workmen were the company’s tenants, whereas of 450

men at Millerton under a dozen lived in the company’s houses. The 12 houses cost over £6OO each and the rent was 12s 6d. The company had not received any letter yet from the Government, but would consider any helpful suggestion to keep the colliery employed.
