ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
NEW PLYMOUTH JUNIORS BEATEN VISITORS FROAI WANGANUI. A junior Association football match was played at Western Park on Saturday between Wanganui Woollen Mills and New Plymouth, the former winning by two goals to one. Heavy rain showers made the ground slippery and the ball heavy. New Plymouth had the territorial advantage practically throughout, and with better shooting would have won: easily.' The teams were:— Wanganui.—Ansley (goal), W. Mclntyre, Tasker, Kirwin, G. Mclntyre, Nixon, Duke, Bain, S. Mclnnis, D. Mclnnis, Rae. -- New Plymouth.—Sykes (goal), Alsop, Milne, F. Roper, Quay, Connott, Anderson, White, Simpson, A. Smith, R. Roper. During a scoreless first spell New Plymouth maintained a territorial advantage most of the time, good work being done by Anderson, F. Roper and White. Tasker was solid in defence for Wanganui, and saved several times. At the other end D. Mclnnis shot for the net, but a good save was effected by Anderson. Simpson’s shot was stopped by Tasker, but someone ran in and kicked through, Ansley saving well. White sent a corner kick, into the goal mouth, from which the ball was neatly headed. Simpson got past Tasker but was crowded on to the outside of the net. Then White kicked another good corner, a score being saved only by good defence.' The second spell' was still in favour of New Plymouth, only poor shooting saving Wanganui in the earlier stages. On one occasion Ansley ran out to save, and while he was out of position every New Plymouth forward, except Sykes, who did not try, missed with shots. Sykes was, then playing in’ the front line, Connott having gone into goal. Wanganui took a brief offensive. Duke centred and Mclnnis sent on; Alsop rushed in and sent away. Alsop shone when he took the ball up to the front line, but could not complete the movement. Attacking strongly New Plymouth forced Wanganui. Simpson missed a rebound, and F. Roper filled the breach, his long shot hitting the bar. Several corners to New Plymouth were resultless. Wanganui then came through, and from a forward rush Duke opened. the score with a hard one past Connott. Almost immediately Tasker, now playing, forward, tipped a second goal past Connett. Simpson retaliated when he put one into an open goal, Ansley having run out.to save one from Roper. Alsop, from the back line, took the ball to Wanganui’s goal, Simpson assisting him, but the defence was too good. R. Roper sent in a shot that went behind. Anderson sent a high, lobbing shot into Ansley’s hands. Smith and Simpson were associated in a hot attack in the goal mouth. Ansley was hard-pressed, but the.best that resulted was a corner. The final score was:— Wanganui 2, New Plymouth 1. Mr. G. Lawrence was' the referee. On Saturday evening the visitors were entertained at a dance in the Mon Desir tearooms. Following a sight-seeing tour yesterday morning, they left by motor for Wanganui. CUP MATCH ENDS IN DRAW. Christchurch. September 27.
