NEW PLYMOUTH HARRIERS

MUDLARKS SHOW GOOD FORM. A pack comprising 22 members of the New Plymouth Harrier Club met at Fitzroy beach on Saturday afternoon for the weekly run. While the members wer, stripping heavy rain fell. One member after stripping found he had left his shoes behind. The pacemeakers were R. J. Stewart and H. Kendrick, who kept the pack moving at a good elip the whole way. By the time the top of Paynter’s Lane was reached several members thought the outing was a non-stop run but they were presently relieved. It was not easy going crossing to and following the' Mangorei Road as the wind was stronger. At last the storm broke and wind, rain and hail arrived in large quantities at a spot on the road where slielter was meagre. The rain had a beneficial effect qu the majority of harriers in that it washed away the mud. When they were well up Mangorei Road the harriers went westward across country to the Avenue Road. The going again was not firm and many were the impromptu slides. Along Avenue Road about a mile to the railway cottages was easy going and from thebe the grass was again, taken. Joining the marathon course the harriers passed the Aotea Gardens and through Mrs. Avery’s props’ty to the scout reserve and the 'borough paddock. This bit was fairly hilly. The track down the Henui was followed. Generally the track was in great order. The greatest improvement has been effected on the mile above the bridge. Down the beach from East End the wind made going good but several runners found the lower leg muscles tightening. Two of the runners made sterling performances. Kendrick,, one, of the season’- new runners, has not been classed fast but as pacemaker on Saturday he ran consistently and brightly at a pace that would not have disgraced the best of the pack. J. Palmer finished well although near the rear, a good performance as ho has not done much serious training or harrier work for some time.
