A SIDE-TRACKED PROMISE
POST OF EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE
MOTOR UNION MAKES PROTEST

The South Island Motor Union to* \ day protested against the action of the Government in charging the whole cost ■ of restoring West Coast roads damaged hy earthquake against the South Islan^' account of the Main Highways Ifund. The president (Mr. A. E. Ansell,-M.P.) • - said ; he' had had a verbal promise from Mrs Ransom, then Minister of Publci Works, that the Government would bear part of the cost. Mr. Ransom had then been unable to. say what proportion the Government. would bear as the amount of the damage had not then been assessed. “He also told me,” said Mr. Ansell, “that he had discussed the position with Mr. Forbes, acquainting him F; of . the. .promise” made, yet -Mr. Forbes said in the House that he personally had made no promise.
