REGENT TALKIES.

Cecil B. de Mille’s “Dynamite,” Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture now showing nightly at The Regent, New Plymouth, is a distinct departure from the type of vehicle he has been making for the past three years, as represented by “The Ten Commandments” and “King of Kings.” These were stories with a religious background. “Dynamite,” however, is of the type of “Manslaughter” and “Male and Female,” abounds in up-to-the-second situations, and the gowns, sets and general investiture which have become a by-word in De Mille productions of this type. The main protagonists are a coal-miner, condemned to hang in the first part of the story; a young lady whose fortune depends on her success at marriage; her fiancee, Roger —and Roger’s wife. With these ingredients De Mill# has concocted a story which presents scenes high up in the tower of a New York skyscraper, o n the lawn of *a country club, in the luxurious home of the feminine lead, in the boudoir of that lady, and deep down iii a coal mine, where a sensational cave-in occurs. The principals are Charles Bickford, Kay Johnson, Conrad Nagbl and Julia Faye. There will be a matinee to-morrow at 2 p.m. EVERYBODY’S TALKIES. “ROOKERY NOOK” CONCLUDING. The big all talking, all laughing, all British comedy “Rookery Nook” will conclude its New Plymouth season at Everybody’s to-day at a matinee at 2 p.m and to-night at 7.45 p.m. Ralph Lynn, Tom Walls and Mary Brough, the stars of the original London stage cast, are all featured in this bigger and 'funnier version. There is also a good supporting programme. COMMENCING TO-MORROW. / ' In “Their Own Desire,” Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer’s all talking attraction commencing at Everybody’s Talkies to-mor-row at 2 p.m. and 7.45 p.m., Norma Shearer appears in the role of a very modern daughter who knows what she wants and how to get it. It is not a. flaming flapper role, but rather a study of an intelligent young woman of today. This new all talking picture is an adaptation of the novel from the pen of Sarita Fuller and is filled with dramatic action and romantic charm. It moves swiftly from an opening episode duiing a fast-played polo match, pauses only briefly in society drawing rooms, and reaches its climax when Miss Shearer and Robert Montgomery, her leading man,Ae lost in a motor-boat during a storm on a lake. Lewis Stone plays the part of the father. A big supporting programme will be headed by an all talkin", singing, dancing, teehnicolour revue “Climbing the Golden Stairs. Charles King, famous star of “Broadway Melodv,” is featured in this attraction.
