INTER-PROVINCIAL SOCCER

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ TEAMS. AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 30. The. junior Soccer teams from Auckland and Wellington secondary schools met for an early game at the Basin Reserve, ,and the first spell was well on the. way when S. Anderson (Wellington) had the misfortune to break an ankle in a collision and fall, leaving Wellington with ten players for the rest of the game. This probably cost Wellington the game, for the Auckland boys were the heavier team and Wellington could ill-afford to play short. The score was 2—2 at half-time. Wellington played up strongly in spite of the handicap and was the first to score again, but could not hold the lead for long. Auckland equalised and then scored again with a penalty, this proving the winning goal—Auckland 4, Wellington 3. The scorers for Auckland were Cleal (3) and Macßae, and for Wellington James (2) and Querke. The senior secondary teams of Auckland and Wellington, met next, and as the teams entered he field the difference in weight and age between them was. very marked. The Auckland lads averaged about 18 years and about 9st. in weight, thd Wellington team not more than 16 years nor more than 7 stone. The Auckland lads not only looked like but also played like a senior team, and their style of play, speed, passing and shooting were as good as has been seen in most! they were 4 to nil behind at half-time was no disgrace. They showed to better advantage in the second spell, and would have done better had there been more sting behind the shots. Auckland scored another trio of goals, but the Wellington lads “broke their duck” through McDermott. The final score was: Auckland 7, Wellington 1. The Auckland scorers were Jepson (4), Grant (2) and Dixon (1).
