PROPOSED ART SOCIETY

(IMPROVED STATUS DESIRED DOMINION CONFERENCE PLANNEX - THE DIFFICULTY OF SELECTION. QUALIFICATION • By Telegraph.—Press Association. : ...... . Wellington, Aug. $). An announcement . was made at • th. annual meeting of the New Zealana Academy of Fine Arts that a on " ference of delegates from all th© art societies in the Dominion would oe held during the annual exhibition in, October. The chairman (Colonel A. D. Carbery), said that it was proposed that two delegates from each of the other ..societies '(including Nelson and Wanganui)), should meet in Wellington, primarily to, discuss concerted action with regard to the dates of shows. Mr. F. Alexander said the conference might discuss the institution of a Royal New Zealand. Academy. He was but© that the creation of Royal Academic? ians, with'letters after their names* would -give New Zealand artists a ( better standing. There were a dozen artists in the Dominion who ■would'hold, their footing anywhere in the world. ■ Colonel Carbery '.said'that for three years or more the setting up of a New Zealand Society qf New; Zealand. Academy *had. bderi-' considered by the council of the society,’into which would be admitted a small, select number- of artists and architects as th® nucleus of what was desired. - If they could attain the title of Royal' they would be fortunate, but it would mor® likely be the Society of Artists, as in New South Wales and America. He did , t not know whether the suggestion could go before the conference until it had been further considered by the council. Election would be a difficult: matter. Members would have to be well qualified, native bom, domiciled and trained in the country, and whole time artists. The proposal had been received in a luke-warm manner, .though a number of members of the council favoured such a scheme. He could not promise that the matter would come before the con-, ference unless there was a more definite pronouncement from members of the Academy. It was proposed by Mr. Alexander that a meeting of th'© Academy be called to discuss the matter. This war carried.
