“TIME FOR CENSORSHIP”
CABLES FROM AUSTRALIA THE REPUDIATION OF DEBTS BRITISH PRESS COMMENT By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.30 p.m. London, Aug. 29. The Times, commenting editorially on the position of Australia, says Mr. Fenton’s “rather wild talk” of censorship over newspaper correspondents’ cables concerning the repudiation of debts may be'overlooked as a rhetorical expression of indignation. It is not censorship that is required,: but a proper understanding of the degree of importance attachable to the extremists’ utterances. However, there seems.no likelihood of their leso lutions being accepted, and Australia will seek financial restoration by more orthodox methods.
The Daily Telegraph says it is not desirable in a constitutionally governed country that political facts should bo concealed. Moreover, they cannot be concealed. A Sydney message says the foregoing comments refer to a statement made by Mr. J. E. Fenton, . Acting Primo Minister, upon his arrival at Melbourne yesterday, when he expressed resentment at the despatch of Press cables to London on the proposed war debt repudiation. He said he was going to find out who was sending such misleading and defamatory reports and added that it was time a censorship was exercised over newspaper correspondents.
