Maps on the Ceiling. The very newest idea for decorating the nursery is. to paint a map of the world upon the ceiling, says the Daily Mail. The effect is extremely decorative, and therefore pleasing to grownups; while the children are not only taught geography almost without knowing it, but,are delighted by the amusing little figures of people and animals with which such a design may be embellished. The idea originated with Air. Edward Halliday, a young painter who has a portrait of Lord Falkland in this year's Academy, and is at present painting Aliss Yvonne Arnaud. He has just executed his first map on the nursery ceiling of a beautiful Chelsea house, and although it was an experiment in medium and treatment, it is a great success, and should inaugurate a new fashion for nursery’- decoration. A Youthful Composer. Tho musical ability of a five-year-old girl, Patricia Anne Simpson, of lowa, is attracting considerable attention in America. The daughter of a piano instructor, the little girl has already composed six pianoforte pieces - and can play exceedingly well, although she has had no formal instruction from her father . Alote Women Pilots. Of twenty-seven candidates for the Class IT, Air Navigators’ Certificate in England, three were women, says an exchange. The British Air Alinistry were the examiners. The holder is entitled to act as pilot for the international 'planes to go on day or night duty with passengers over land and sea. In England a renewal of the A certificate was lately given an aviatrix in spite of a severe disablement that she had suffered when her Moth crashed nearly two years ago. West Australia lias just licensed its first woman air pilot. This is Aliss Helen Prosser,- who was stimulated by the success of her brother who worked with the Air Force during the war. West Australians are said to be especially keen on aviation, as they recognise the practical value of thus linking up various parts of their State. Blind Girl Knitters. A visit to a large factory in England where the blind girls knit every-type of woolien garment, is mentioned by a London correspondent. Each girl has a knitting machine of her own and can manipulate it in an almost uncannily clever way. A girl, who was herself totally blind, was their teacher, and one of the supervisors stated that there .were fewer tears over the learning process since she had superseded a teacher who had eight. The cry ‘T can’t do it, I shall never be able to do it,” is met by the quiet assurance of the teacher: “But I am blind, too, and you can learn, just as I did.” The girls work out beautiful patterns and all of them can earn from 30s t0,45s a week.
