THEFTS BY MAORI BOY
WELFARE DEPARTMENT WARD. S' Frederick Taylor Kupe, a Maori boy, pleaded guilty in the New Plymouth Police Court yesterday before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., to the theft of sums amounting to £5 2s 6d, the property fit George H. Taylor, Rahotu. The charges extended over .the period from March 1 to August 19. Kupe elected to be dealt with summarily. - Senior-Sergeant McCrorie explained that Kupe had appeared in the Children’s Court in 1926 and had been placed under the care of the child welfare officer, later being licensed out on a farm. He had taken advantage of Taylor, who was 80 years of age, and somewhat deaf, and used to creep into the rooms of the house and take the money. He had finally been caught and arrested. He had told the police that he had been discharged from the care of the Welfare Department but that was not done until the boys concerned reached' the age of 21. ( The magistrate adjourned the case to allow investigations to be made Into the exact position of the boy with regard to the Welfare Department.
