TARANAKI RUGBY GROUNDS
THE UNION’S PROGRAMME. In pursuance of its policy of providing first-class playing fields throughout Taranaki the Taranaki Rugby Union in recent times has undertaken a very ambitious and praiseworthy programme. Not only New Plymouth, which has its very fine Pukekuna Park, but other centres in the province require grounds that Rugby can call its own, and wherever important matches are played it is desirable that there should be adequate accommodation for spectators. The ordinary funds of the Rugby Union, however, “must be quite inadequate to meet the demands, and it is only by means of a special effort that a sufficient sum is likely to be obtained to finance the equipment of such grounds as the union has in New Plymouth and Hawera with stands for the public and facilities for the players. Some months ago the union obtained a permit from the Government to make the special effort in the form of an a-rt union. This has been organised on a scale of some magnitude, the prizes offered totalling £4OOO, of which £2OOO will be the first and £lOOO the second prize. The tickets are sold at the popular price of 2s 6d by agents all over the province. Tomorrow will be the last day on which tickets will be purchasable, and the art union is to be drawn on September 5,
