WAIJvLEY WINS MEDAL ROUND. Some good scores were returned by members of the Hawera Golf Club on Saturday when a medal competition was played. Walkley with 09 net w; a with Harrison and Melody only a stroke behind. The best eards returned were: —

CHILDREN’S- FUNCTION AT- HAWERA PROCEEDS FOR BAND FUNDS. ’ With numbers of children clad in all colours of' the> spectrum indulging in old and beautiful dances, the Hawera Winter Show- building presented an animated spectacle on Friday evening. The occasion was a children’s fancy dress ball in aid of the Municipal Band’s uniform fund.

The costuming or the children was excellent, several novel dresses in particular shewing much thought. The judges, Mrs. Fitzgerald and Miss Goldsmith/botk of Eltham, had some difficulty in assessing the merits of the dress is, eventually making the following awards:— Best dressed.—Girls, Peggy Hay-Mc-Kenzie (Power and Patches); boys, Reg Muschamp (Tudor Prince); Gny tots, Merle Fairweather (Ballet Dancer). Most- original.—Giris, Doreen Cowie (Ijl-Katie); boys, Ray Nixon (The Man With a Nose).

Best, pair.—Pixio Kent (Sleeping Beauty) and Nonna Nixon (Prince Channing) 1, Margaret Simpson (Early Victorian Lady) and Cliff Horsburgh (narly Victorian Gentleman) 2. Best paper costume—Kuby Toy (Chicken) 1, Chrissie Russell (Rose) 2, Nancy Evans (Christmas Tree) 3. ’ Most economical —Girls, Jocelyn Evans (Jackie Coogan) I, boys, Peter Lansdown (Cowboy). Dancing was not the only occupation of the children, for items were given by Missei Audrey McLaren, Joan Thomas, Doreen Naim, Norma Nixon, ~ Vernie Shakenpeare, Betty Roberts and Junne Goodwin. Accompaniments were played by Mrs. A. Bonetti (piano) and Mr. J. Hannah (bagpipes). The music for the dancing was supplied by an orchestra organised by Mr. H. C. A. Fox.

The excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of Mrs. Hobbs and a number of helpers. The committee in charge of the dancing was Mesdames Pacey, Simpson and Henry, Misses Lamb, Purser, Evans and Bullock, and Messrs. Kirby and R. Morrissey.

PATEA PERSONALS. Mr. and Airs. S. Southon have returned from Auckland and proceeded to Waverley. Mr. W. McComisky is spending a holiday in Patea. Mr. A. E. Codling, Whentmkura railway bridge. contractor, has gone on a business visit to Thames.
