COUNTY ADMINISTRATION

HAWERA COUXCH MEETING. MONTH’S WORK REVIEWED. The Hawera County Council held its monthly meeting on Saturday, there being present Messrs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman), H. I. Crocker, E. A. Washer, A. E. Death, A. G. Larcom, G. W. Williams and J. Rothery. The engineer, Mr. Muggeridge, reported that the metal authorised for the Tongahue Road, about IQ chains, was completed. The cutting on the same road would have to be left till the dry Weather before anything could be done as it was all a bog. Short lengths of gravel had been laid on the following roads: Denby, 15 chains; Fairfield, 12 chains; Manawapou, 5 chains; Duckworth, 8 chains. A short length had been started in the Okaiawa township and when this was done it would, complete the work authorised to date. The earthwork for the tramline to the metal site was practically finished and the horse track was well advanced. As soon as the winch was delivered the building of two small bridges and the laying of the rails would he put in hand. All the crushing plant' was in readiness to be shifted and this would be attended to as soon as the paddocks were dry enough to cross with the heavy machinery. It was suggested by Mr. Rothery that three corners on the Noonan Gorge should be improved. . Permission to use a pneumatic-tyred lorry on the new road from Oliawe beach was sought by A. Brown. It was decided that the Ohawe Beach Road would be open to all traffic except iron shod vehicles.

In a circular letter the Highways Board district representative, Mr. P. Keller, advised that Hie No. 7 ■ District Highways Council regretted it was unable tc. make purchases of bitumen on behalf of local authorities. While the board admitted that it was interested in the matter and that any reduction in •cost was of Benefit to itself, it considered that the purchase of bitumen by the board for work which was being carried out by local bodies would be open to strong objections by. commercial interests. At the same time the board was unable to understand why it should be able to purchase at a better price than a combination of local authorities and thought that if quotas were invited throughout, say, the four centres the local bodies should be able to obtain the same prices as the board would obtain.

Approval of the renaming of Tawhiti Road as Fairfield and Beach Road was received from the district land registrar.

A resolution urging upon the Government the desirability of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board’s outer area remaining a portion of the board’s district was passed.
