ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
BUSINESS OF THE COUNCIL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The council of the New Zealand Football Association to-night received a letter from the Southland Association, stating that it was sending two teams to take part in the South Island primary schools tournament in Christchurch next month, and asked if it was possible to make a donation towards the cost. The secretary was instructed to reply that it was not possible. A lengthy letter was received from the Auckland Association regretting the publicity given to the council’s action regarding the conduct of certain players and the action taken by Auckland.' The council expressed the view that the punishment inflicted was inadequate, but Auckland pointed out that McElligott committed no offence. He went off the field under a misapprehension, and could not be punished. He was not ordered off. Mr. Campbell referred to the original report from the Auckland* Association, which stated that McElligott did leave the field in error, but said further: “McElligott advised the captain to take the team off the field.” It was decided to refer the Auckland Association to this statement in the report. A visit of a Christchurch team to Wellington on August 1G to play a representative match was approved. The »South Auckland Association wrote that an application had been made to the trustees of the Herbert Smith Trust Fund, Hamilton, for a shield, the value not to exceed £25, for the South Island primary schools tournament (heavyweights), and an eight-guinea cup for the lightweights, and cups of lesser values for school associations at Invercargill, Dunedin, West Coast and Christchurch.
