■i MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. WORK ON ROADS AND FOOTPATHS The New Plymouth Borough Council, met last night.. Present: The Mayor (Air. H. V. S. Griffiths) and Councillors G. AL Spence, F. Amoore, R. J. Pentecost, P. E. Stainton, J. Brown, J. W. Darby and F. J. Hill. . The Australasian Performing Rights Association wrote informing the council that the permits granted for the performance of musical works controlled by the association in the Fitzroy Hall and Kawaroa Park pavilion expired on August 31. The respective fees were £2 12s. and £2 5s. —The council decided to renew the agreement for another year. The music week festival committee was granted permission to make small fixed charges for admission to the performance of the Messiah in the Opera House on Sunday, August 17. The Oakura Beach Improvement Society notified that Messrs. R. Davies, K. Marsh, W. K. Morris, J. Jans and C. Bond had been elected to- the committee. It was recommended that Mr. G. H. Bell should be appointed the council’s representative, Mrs. Clara West having nominated Air. Harold Corbett as her representative. It was pointed out by the town clerk that the deed provided for four committeemen only apart from two borough representatives and one man nominated by Airs. West. It was decided to ask Alessrs. Bell and Davies to, represent the council on the committee.

The council passed the resolution necessary to give effect to the decision of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association that the principle of the present scheme of heavy traffic fees distribution should be continued subject to the payment by the Taranaki sub-district of the following subsidies from its net collections: 10 per cent, to the Inglewood sub-district; 3 per cent, to the Stratford sub-district; 2 per cent, to the Eltham sub-district; 2j per cent, to the Whangamomona sub-district; 2J per cent to the Egmont sub-district. The Mayor said last year the New Plymouth council received £798. This year there was a 50-50 arrangement with the Taranaki County Council whereby the borough council would receive £lO4O. After the reading of further correspondence from Mr. Bcnoni White it was decided on the motion of Councillor Amoore, seconded by Councillor Spence, that without in any way. admitting liability for the information of the council only, the engineer be instructed to furnish a fresh estimate of the cost of dealing with storm water running into his section in Leach Street. Upon the. recommendation of the finance committee it .was decided to purchase for £6OO Mr. George Coombes’ property on Carrington R-oad behind the Borough Chambers. This would square up the council’s section and enable street widening to be undertaken when required. It was decided to inform the Frankleigh Park Progressive Association that the metalling of Doralto Road would be put in hand when the weather permit; ted. On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided that Victoria Road should be metalled when the weather was suitable. The Western Park Board was authorised to improve and extend the roadway up the hill in the park at an estimated cost of £5O. Subject to certain conditiorv, it was decided to accept the offer of Axrs. A. K. Short to dedicate a strip of 20 links wide for the widening of Mangorei Road. The borough engineer (Mr. C. Clarke) was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of metalling Turehu Street and to effect necessary repairs to Puni Street, Newton Street and Record Street. On the recommendation of the electric light and tramways committee, it was decided to reply to a letter from the Taranaki Electric Power Board that the council would consent to the board’s supplying settlers on the north side of the Bristol Road as at present, subject to the condition that when this area was included in the New Plymouth supply area the consent would be at the pleasure of the council. In connection with his letter regarding the removal of the light in Brois Street, it was decided to forward Air. R. Rickard a copy of the electrical engineer’s report on the subject.
