John Henry Meara, the famed globetrotter, in an endeavour to regain the round-the-world record taken by the Graf Zeppelin, left Roosevelt Field this morning for Harbour Grace in the Lockhead Vega cabin monoplane City of New York with Mr. 11. J. Brown as pilot. A Sealyham terrier accompanied them. In attempting to take olf for Dublin from Harbour Grace, the machine was wrecked through the puncturing of a tyre. Neither the passenger nor pilot was injured. Mr. Mears, who made records in 1913 and 1928, hoped to travel round the world in 20 days, thus beating; th e Grat Zeppelin’s 23 days 15 hours flight, planned to fly via Dublin, Berlin, Moscow, Novasibrak, Chita, Kharbaiovsk and Chignik across the . Behring be. fringe and the North Pacific to Seattle, Chicago and New York. The City of New lork was flt.ed with high wings and a 425. horse-power Wasp motor. It had a flying range, of 18 hours (2500 miles) and a cruising speed of 150 miles an hour. The flight was expected to take 15 to 20 days. Mr. Mears arrived at Harbour Grace on Saturday afternoon.
