POINT-TO-POINT RACING
RANGITIKEI ANNUAL GATHERING. TORM GOOD FOR MANAWATU. In brilliant sunshine on Wednesday and under conditions more like spring than winter, thus making for the enjoyment of the twelve hundred spectators, the Rangitikei Hunt Club’s point-to-point- steeplechases were held at' Neuman’s Line, near Marton, and proved a great success, states the Wanganui Chronicle.' Some fine displays were given by the hunters engaged in the crosscountry events, while the jumping in the Hunters” Jumping Competition was also of a high class. Form at- the gathering proved 'sound, Risk winning the Lightweight Steeplechase and going on to win the Man'aw'atu Hunt Club Steeplechase yesterday. A feature of the racing was the double win of Mr. K.’McK. Duncan in the Heavyweight and Lightweight Steeplechases, this popular amateur horseman,-on Trouble and Risk respectively, outriding- his. opponents. Results were: — ; HEAVYWEIGHT STEEPLECHASE. TROUBLE (Mr. K. Mc.K. Duncan),, b g bv Sir Frisco—Worry mare, owner 1 CANBERRA. (Mr. L. McLean, Mr. F. McLean 2 RED SPIDER (Mr. D. A. Cameron) . 3 Also started: Mataroa (Mr. J. Goodwin), j Moriarty (Mr.- P. -W. Briant), Franfeldt ‘(Mr. J. H. -McLean); - Mataroa and Trouble were early-in-the-lead but Mataroa came to grief at a- ditch.- Trouble was displaced in the lead-by-Canberra, but took the lead •at the last -obstacle and came on to win by five lengths. ' LIGHT-WEIGHTS- STEEPLECHASE. RISK' (Mf.'K. McK. Duncan) br g by. Elysian —Administrator hiare, owner 1 MODE (Mr. V/. W.® Wilson) owner .. .2’ SPECIA (Mr. E. H. Simpson), owner 3 Also started: Minnehaha (Mr. F. McLean), The Don (owner). Mode led over the initial stages .and The Don fell after going half a unile. - Minnehaha followed Mode entering, on the last mile but dipped and dropped her -rider at the double after crossing, the road the second time. Risk was always' handy and went up to Mode three-quarters of a mile from home. The pair 'disputed the leadership fiz the rest of the journey but Risk went to the front over the last- obstacle. Mode came again over the . final stages and nearly caught Risk napping, Mr. Duncan getting his horce home by half a length. . MEMBERS’ STEEPLECHASE. MATAPUNI (Mr. J. D. Simpson) b g by Mullingar—unknown, owner .• • 1 GLAMIS (Mr. Evan McGregor), br g, . Mr. H. Lourie 2 NADA (Mr. G. C. Birch), owner 3 Also started: - Cleland (Mr. W. A. Green), Ted -(Mr. J. G. Wilson). . Matapuni and-Nada were early in the picture and Cleland fell after going half the ; distance. Glamis went up half a mile from the finish and dispossessed Nada of her position, joining issue with Matapuni. In the run home Matapuni did beet to win by a neck. HUNTERS; JUMPING COMPETITION. TARGET ■ (Miss B. Gaisford) •- •’ 1 GENTLEMAN- JACK (Miss M. J. Stewart) 2 TE PUKE-(Mr.’Brian- Simpson) ..... 3 There were thirteen contestants. Miss Gaisford also won Mr.- Duncan’s trophy for the best lady rider. The judge, Mr. .James Bull, stated that the standard of jumping was ver J’ 'high indeed, but in ho instance did a competitor secure the maximum points, at the initial obstacle, a gorse hedge. ; HUNT CLUB. The Taranaki Hunt Club will hold its final meeting for the season on Wednesday next at- Mr. Will Cole’s, about one mile-from Waitara on the Main North Road, when members of the Egmont-Wan-ganui Hunt will pay a return visit. . From information received there will be a large muster from the south, notwithstanding that the farmers are very busy.. The southern: members will be entertained at lunch, at ,the Masonic Hotel,, Waitara, .and at the conclusion of the hunt will be entertained by Mr. W. Cole and his family.
