COUNTY WORK SURVEYED. INCREASE IN PETROL TAX. References to local body work as affecting the Patea County were made by Mr. W. G. Belton, chairman of the council, at Kakaramea, on Wednesday evening. Referring to the question of the petrol tax, Mr. Belton said that when an increase hod been mooted at the Counties’ Conference the chairman had said it would be putting the saddle on the right horse. There had been a great deal of opposition by the motorists but it had to be remembered that probably half the motorists in the Dominion were county ratepayers. The addition of 3d to the petrol tax might prove of great value to backcountry settlers. It would prooably go to the Highways Board and he hoped that it would bo expended on roads other than main highways. If so it would be of great use in developing inland roads. He hoped the extra money would be allocated as in the past, the board considering each -case on its merits. Patea would have a big claim .because of its special difficulty as regards carting metal. Last year the county had paid the Railway Department £42&0 for freight on metal, In the Patea County Council there was a division of opinion. The northern members were desirous of spending more money on the main highway but the remainder wished tp concentrate on the inland roads, and rightly in Mr. Belton’s opinion. The time had come when more attention should be paid tothe inland roads, in which the interests of local bodies and dairy companies were identical. The comity received rates from farmers and supplied means of getting the produce to the market. The policy of the Patea County Council had been criticised by the ratepayers as being too' niggardly but it was the 4 same as that advocated by the Loans’ Board—-“ Pay as you go.” Other counties raised, loads to build roads and before the loans were repaid the roads were worn out;: “If we continue as we aro going,” concluded Mr. Belton, “we will be on Hhe box seat’ in a few years.” LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN. M SQUADRON MEETING. A meeting of M. Squadron, Legion, of Frontiersmen,: was held in Hawera on Tuesday, Captain Vickridge, 0.C., presiding.
